What is Nutrition?

Simply said, Nutrition is the study of food at work in our bodies, our source for energy, and the medium for which our nutrients can function. Think of nutrition as the building blocks of life.

The essential nutrients for life include carbohydrates, proteins, and lipids (fats), as well as fiber, vitamins, minerals, and water—the solvent for all soluble ingredients in the blood and cells. The absorption of nutrients starts the moment we begin to digest our foods, as they are transported to assist all the metabolic processes in the human body.

Good nutrition means getting the right amount of nutrients from healthy foods in the right combinations. Having nutrition knowledge and making smart choices about the foods you eat can and will help you achieve optimum health over your lifetime, and be a key to avoiding obesity, illness, and many of today’s most prevalent chronic diseases.

Nutrition is just one key to developing and maintaining good health. Good health is defined as a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being — a healthy mind, body, and spirit.

Nutrition is at work during our entire life-cycle — from infancy to adolescence, adulthood and in our senior years — and can be the antidote for many of today’s common problems, such as stress, pollution, sexual vitality, and disease prevention.

Does Your Nutrient Status Measure Up?

by Dr. Amani Flood, N.D.

Are you someone who tries to eat right, makes healthy food choices and takes a daily multivitamin supplement? Do you wonder if you are doing enough? You can confirm whether your diet and supplement choices are meeting your nutrient goals through specialized tests that measure your levels of vitamins and antioxidants.

It is the nutrients in the food, not the food itself that supports health. That doesn’t mean we don’t need to eat! Food is our delivery system for nutrition, but not all foods are created equal. To find out how well your diet is at delivering the nutrition your body needs, a micronutrient panel is one tool you can use. SpectraCell labs measures vitamins B, A, D and K, along with three essential amino acids, protein, fat, carbs, calcium, mag, trace minerals, and what is really exciting is that it also measures antioxidants.

Antioxidant testing is critical information for someone with cancer or any immune deficiency condition.

Micronutrient testing is not for everyone, it’s pricey and not covered by insurance. But it’s a valuable tool for anyone with a goal of disease avoidance because nutrient deficiency is thought to be the root cause of most chronic illnesses. This test can help solve medical mysteries for those people who can’t seem to get better despite not having any definite medical diagnosis or how hard they’re trying to live better.

Armed with the results of Micronutrient testing you can then take the next obvious step of adding quality nutrient supplements to your daily routine.

The nutritional supplement industry is largely unregulated, which means that no agency is charged with monitoring the content, quality or safety of vitamins and nutritional supplements. This leads us to the cautionary quip: “buyer beware.” The best way to get vitamin supplements is to purchase them from a reputable health food store or from your qualified naturopath. A naturopath can tell you what supplements are safe for your condition, ensure that there are no medicine or food contraindications, and determine the best dosage that will get you the results you seek.

One thing that can be frustrating about nutritional supplements, especially here on the Island, is when your provider is out of stock.

To ensure you have a steady supply of your trusted nutrients, this month we are launching our Auto-Refill programme. It’s easy to enroll and does not cost anything. What’s more is that you will actually qualify for discounts! All you do is, any time you purchase a supplement, simply pre-pay for the next bottle. You will receive 5% off and receive a guaranteed stock date.

In recognition of Nutrition Month, to get you started we are featuring Micronutrient Testing at 10% off when you enroll in Auto-Refill. We are also offering 15% off of your total nutrient purchase when you enroll in Auto-Refill.
